Pranaams to the noble departed soul 🙏 Sri MMS ji 🙏 Lesson on why not all great professionals will be great CEO.. My humble submission of perspectives having lived through these years as a young Indian 🙏

Sri MMS ji will be remembered for his significant contribution for India’s development as a good soldier (finance minister) in the direction of then daring prime minister Sri PVNR garu during the most challenging times in India’s economy.

Following are some of my thoughts in a free wheeling discussion with few friends this morning.

Let me state up front that whenever i refer to the leaders further in this post without the honorific titles of Sri, Ji or garu..it’s only for brevity and by no means reducing the honor of such great personalities.

Now, first and foremost it’s a moment of great respect for the departed soul for all his positive contributions towards the development of India.

Having said that, i personally think MMS was a great professional who excelled in the guidance of a great leader. But not an inspiring leader who set the agenda, inspire and drive an entire nations imagination for future.

Every organisation faces very similar situations . Some people are very good professionals but are bad as CEO.

MMS needed a visionary experienced politician like PVNR as a leader(CEO) to excel but once he bacame the CEO(PM), the organisation(country) lost the way as it lacked a good direction. Like few bad CEO, he was accused to have gotten surrounded by useless coterie which guided him in the wrong way. Speaking of bad advisory boards even in professional organisations.

Coterie was put in check during PVNR time. MMS appeared to have not been able to do the same with his leadership and hence failed as a CEO.

Like in every organisation, different people have different expertise, and the best outcomes are achieved when people are in the correct roles. Then they excel in their roles and the overall organisation succeeds.

During PVNR time , focus was on bringing the nation back from the financial bankruptcy and dire economic challenges. It needed bold revolutionary measures to get it back on its feet to survive and move forward. PVNR and MMS jointly succeeded in that effort. PVNR used all his political leadership and diplomacy to achieve the same and had the audacity to appoint the right people like MMS for the important change that was needed at that stage. He provided the all important political cover shield for an expert like MMS to implement the change.

But by the time MMS became PM, country needed a leadership that can strengthen internal mechanisms for longer term growth. It needed leadership which focused on building the culture of the nation. The need of the hour was to instil confidence to this young aspiring nation and to inspire a billion people. In my humble opinion, MMS failed in that critical aspect. He created a perception that he wouldn’t be able to provide the inspirational direction that was very much needed.

Whether someone likes or hates Modi, i think he provided leadership to the now aspirational young India by building this cultural fabric to bring back confidence and pride in its citizens. He provided the inspirational leadership that young India was looking for. Culture is an important mechanism for long term success of any organisation or nation.

Every organisation needs different leadership qualities at different stages. I felt MMS as the CEO was certainly a bad choice and failure at that stage of the country. As a professional he was excellent , but not as a CEO.

No magic was needed to happen at that stage of the country . What it needed was for the common citizen to believe and feel respected on a global stage about their culture and history.

Once the culture is established, the teams will work towards the goals and that was an important element of leadership at that stage.

Countries and societies are also a macrocosm of the organisations. Similar to the need for different leadership qualities at different growth stages of companies, larger macrocosms like nations need the same.

One good thing about this land in my opinion is that at different stages of its history it was fortunate to have gotten some good leaders who set it in the right direction at it’s crucial times from millenia of it’s history . that’s why iam an eternal optimist on the progress of the humankind .

Workplace Transformation – 1

It is here and now. Even as we read this message, the way we work is rapidly changing in a big way…

Changing the way we work, live, play and learn..This is the Vision statement of one of the best companies and the leadership team i had the opportunity to work for early on in my career.

The vision is now fast becoming a reality..

World is starting to realise and even expedite this change in the way we work, albeit pushed by an unfortunate pandemic situation.

We will have an innovative platform released soon to help  manage this change. The platform and solutions will not only improve employee and customer delight, but also better shareholder value and societal impact.

Joining our human spirit and the innovative platforms, together the world will come out of the current challenging situation in a much better way than it entered into it..

Stay focused.Stay productive..Stay Tuned for Innovation…

Nature’s Fury

nature’s fury…

it is tough to handle when people mess too much with it.

No personal wealth, health or the nations GDP, economy, borders and military can save.

It knows no boundaries and has no partiality towards any social status, region, religion, caste, creed, gender and other..

It respects no political boundaries and doesn’t need to be politically correct.

Too much credence we give to the human progress (scientific or social) is an eyewash when the nature is furious and it will do what it does…

All it takes is one invisible new virus and/or microorganism to shake the entire humanity around the world rendering the entire social and scientific leadership helpless..

Times like this perhaps are a reminder to spend sometime going beyond physical sciences and understand the metaphysics and the philosophy of nature and our existence..

Trash

The plastic and styrofoam trash at the restaurants is a man made problem that should be addressable.

If we created the mess, we should be able to get out of it, atleast we hope.

In the name of progress, many times our civilization created short term band-aid solutions. We later understand that they are more messier than the problems they were supposed to address, if any.

Iam sure the better sense will prevail in the society and we realize some simpler solutions used earlier were better and we re”search” and innovate again 😅

The mother earth must be laughing. She has seen many civilization in its history over millennia biting to dust when the so-called progress was not inline with the greater good.

Its a cycle and we will also either get out of this junk pile or the mother knows how to discipline its children.

Fearlessness and Decision making – part 1

Fearlessness and decision making are part of a closed loop system feeding eachother.

Fear is a natural feature built into all the species to manage risk. Managing that fear for the best next course of action aka “decision making” is what most of the personality, leadership development that we develop over time.

Each of us make decisions all the time in our daily lives.

Postponing a decision aka “procrastination” is also a decision based on the circumstantial evidence and considered to be best course of action at that time.

Sometimes delayed decisions can lead to catastrophe similar to hasty decisions.

We need to strike that correct “balance” in this decision making. It seems even more important when it impacts larger good beyond self; e.g. teams, organisation, society and countries..

Several ways we continue to learn and enhance these as we journey along..

Few things that help us in this journey include

  • personal development like yoga
  • having a good set of advisors and boards

Some of these enhance our ability to deal with the two important things – fearlessness and decision making.

More details in the next post..

please share your thoughts as well..

Innovation at work

A true example of innovation and entrepreneurship at work.

Ethnographic study, passion, perceiverance, first pilot customer, continuous learning and innovation, customer delight surveys and empathy to achieve the intended outcome👍

The video is in one of the regional languages in India called “Telugu”. The innovator/entrepreneur featured in this video not conventional educated and spoke in his native language. He invented and innovated a machine for the benefit of his own community of weavers in this part of the world. He received several awards in India and also his life story was recently released as a feature film.

Artificial General Intelligence

With the current basis of our science and technology, Artificial Intelligence in any foreseeable time will only address the augmented and narrow intelligence aspect.

We will further enhance the capability of human sensory power for the regular and challenged of the world. And enhance value in niche areas. This may also be the best use of the current state of AI work in the world.

For the true Artificial General Intelligence, the roots are to be found in Philosophy, Spiritual Sciences. Most likely in ancient scriptures of wisdom. It needs for us in this generation of scientists and technologists to shed the false ego and study those scriptures keeping aside the religious and cultural affiliations.

We haven’t even fully cracked the nature vs nurture puzzle. Genetic knowledge, Morals, Ethics,Reinforced learning, expert systems incl parents to teachers to life in general…

In my humble opinion, Artificial General Intelligence is not just another technological problem to solve but its about understanding human and leads to/by wisdom. It is not going to happen anytime soon with the current direction.

AGI is the ultimate pursuit but i believe the world will explore and benefit more from augmented / narrow intelligence in the next few decades.

Thinking of Toilets

The famous Bill Gates shared a post recently on LinkedIn that the reinvented toilets are a part of 6 billion dollars annual opportunity for companies that are first to market. And also that they have a potential to save millions of lives. Impressive, huh?

Thinking of toilets:

In recent times, for myriad reasons, toilets have found a huge fan base. They seem to inspire/break love stories

Hit Refresh

My in-laws were moving to another home. I enquired with my mother-in-law about the progress of the packing. She said it is pretty much done since a lot of junk that got piled up over the years has been discarded. She was happy that the moving process helped them clear unnecessary junk that got piled up over the years.

Isn’t it the same with our lives in general as well?

Automobile

At the time Internal Combustion engine was invented about a century ago, there was a good use of electric cars. It is interesting to note that about 1/3 of all cars (though a small number) sold in USA were supposedly electric.

But Mr. Benz and Mr. Ford shaped the automobile industry with gasoline powered IC engines, and it all changed since then. In the past century automobile has become an essential daily use machine. But now people love to hate its technology because of pollution, choice of fuel among others.

Now a century later, we have come a full circle.

The journey

Recently in a discussion with friends, it was observed that many in software engineering and other professionals are posting and talking about philosophy and spirituality (not necessarily religion).

For the past few years as I study deeper into software engineering, science, technology, life sciences and society i noticed that there is no difference between these topics and spirituality.

In fact all of them were nothing but different aspects of the same study. Personally it was rather easy for me to understand and relate to the topics if I understood the essence, the common sense thread.

It is like “reaching the point where all roads end from where all roads began”.

Energy

Buildings typically have huge windows and damn we need maximum electricity to cool the rooms when sun is banging on those window panels.

‘Energy’ is something that our science got it wrong whether it is about powering our automobiles or homes and offices in general.

We are noticing the shortcomings and effects of our technology. And we need to change faster. It is going to be a difficult journey given the legacy of the current technology.

In pursuit of..

Whether it’s Mumbai, Shanghai, New York, Dhaka, Tokyo or any big city in the world, people are always in-hurry and on-the-run to make a living.

The amount of crowd or the commuting mode might change, but the crowded thoughts and mad rush inside each person’s head is perhaps similar.

Indian design elements

Traditional indian design is more driven by nature and using harmony. We typically find it manifest in both form and function aspects of the designs.

For example, traditional indian architectural design methodology “vastu shastra” uses natural forces in design. Indian women wear “sari” uses natural motifs.

Symmetry and cyclical design elements also are dominant in indian design perhaps driven by its deep spiritual and philosophical background weaved into most of the life choices in traditional India.

Nature, symmetry, cyclical, fractal, harmony are the themes that come to my mind.

Most of the modern day scientists are humble enough to accept that they have barely scratched the surface. But, egoistic enough to disagree that some of the ancient philosophers had made better progress and cracked the code for the universe and humanity better. – Venky Rao
